- Tapioca Starch Technical Grade: A Solution For Non-Food Industry
Tapioca Starch Technical Grade, also called industrial grade tapioca starch, refers to cassava starch that is produced and used for industrial or technical purposes rather than for food or culinary applications. Technical-grade tapioca starch is manufactured with specific properties and characteristics meet the requirements of various industries such as paper production, textile manufacturing, adhesives, construction materials, and other non-food applications.
What is Tapioca starch Technical Grade?
Tapioca starch is renowned for its purity, comprising solely unadulterated tapioca. Sourced from the root of the cassava plant, native tapioca starch boasts minimal residual impurities, a neutral flavor profile, and exceptional gel-forming properties. Typically, discussions surrounding tapioca starch segregate it into two categories: food grade tapioca starch, primarily utilized in the food industry, and tapioca starch technical grade, employed in non-food sectors.
Tapioca starch technical grade finds application in various non-food industries, including paper, textiles, construction (such as in paint formulations), and more.
Specification of Tapioca Starch Technical grade
Below is a general specification for Native tapioca starch Industrial grade
Starch: Minimum 85%
Moisture: Maximum 13%
Whiteness: Minimum 90%
Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): Maximum 30 ppm
Viscosity: Minimum 650 BU (Brabender Units)
pH: 5-7
Ash: Maximum 0.2%
Cassava starch packaging way
Native tapioca starch technical grade can be packaged as below:
1. 50kg PP Bag:This packaging option involves packing the tapioca starch in polypropylene (PP) bags with a capacity of 50 kilograms. These bags are sturdy and commonly used for storing and transporting native tapioca starch. This package is very common in Vietnam tapioca starch packing.
2. 20/25kg PP/Kraft paper bag
In addition to 50kg bag, we can do smaller size of bag, such as 20/25kg bag for packing tapioca starch as per customer request.
3. 850/500kg Jumbo Bag: Alternatively, for larger quantities, tapioca starch can be packed in jumbo bags with a capacity of 850 kilograms or 500kg kilograms.

Other tapioca starch products for Industrial Sectors
Pregelatinized tapioca starch
Pregelatinized tapioca starch is a modified form of plant-based tapioca starch that has been processed to undergo a pregelatinization process. During this process, vegan native tapioca starch is heated and then dried, which modifies its properties and makes it easier to dissolve in cold or warm water.
This physically-modified tapioca starch is used in Charcoal Briquettes. Find out more here: https://vietnamtapiocastarch.vn/tapioca-starch-for-charcoal-briquettes
Cationic starch
Cationic tapioca starch is a modified starch that has been chemically treated. The products is commonly used in paper industry.
E1404 Oxidised tapioca starch
Oxidized Tapioca Starch (E1404) is a modified starch derived from tapioca material which is a starchy substance extracted from the roots of the cassava plant. The oxidation process involves treating tapioca starch with an oxidizing agent, which modifies its properties for various industrial applications.

Applications of Cassava starch Technical grade
Paper Industry
Technical-grade tapioca starch is indispensable in the paper industry. The product enhances paper quality and production efficiency in the paper industry. In addition to native tapioca starch industrial grade, other modified tapioca starch can be used in this sectors, including Cationic starch and Oxidised starch E1404.
Textile Industry
In the textile industry, tapioca starches serve multifaceted roles, contributing to various stages of fabric production and enhancement. As sizing agents, tapioca starches are applied to stiffen and preserve threads, thereby enhancing weaving efficiency and ensuring consistent fabric quality.
Moreover, tapioca starches are utilized as color thickeners in printing processes, facilitating the creation of vibrant and long-lasting printed materials with crisp detailing.
Construction industry
In the construction industry, tapioca starch serves as a valuable filler component in paint products. Its utilization as a filler enhances the viscosity and texture of paint formulations, contributing to improved application properties and coating consistency.
The products can also be used in metal industry, specifically steel products.
Adhesive Industry
Cassava starch is extensively utilized in the adhesive industry due to its excellent binding properties. As a key ingredient in adhesive formulations, cassava starch acts as a versatile binding agent, facilitating the cohesion of various materials.
Charcoal Briquettes
Tapioca starch is an ideal choice for binding charcoal briquettes during their production. When mixed with water, this starch forms a thick, sticky gel-like substance that easily adheres to the charcoal particles, creating a strong bond when dried. This adhesive strength helps ensure the integrity and durability of the briquettes during handling, transportation, and combustion.
